Unlocking Ethiopia’s Coffee Potential through Renovation & Rejuvenation (R&R) Financing

06 11 25

Ethiopia’s coffee sector stands at a defining crossroads. As the birthplace of Arabica and Africa’s leading coffee producer, Ethiopia’s coffee carries both cultural heritage and immense economic promise. Yet, much of its potential remains untapped—hampered by aged coffee trees that further has been impacting livelihood, nature and climate.

This report brings together two pivotal documents that lay the foundation for sector-wide renewal to unlock financing for Ethiopian coffee renovation and rejuvenation:

• The Scoping Study: a comprehensive assessment of Ethiopia’s coffee landscape that identifies renovation and rejuvenation (R&R) as essential strategies to restore productivity, enhance farmer incomes, and strengthen climate resilience; and calls for establishment of Ethiopian Coffee Renovation Fund (ECRF) to support regenerative and sustainable coffee production.

• The Concept Proposal: building on the findings and recommendations of the scoping study; the designed proposal presents an innovative financing mechanism and governance structure for the ECRF to mobilize resources and to support sustainable and regenerative coffee production by smallholder farmers through creating accesses to financing, technical assistance, and multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Together, these resources present a bold and practical roadmap to transform Ethiopia’s coffee sector. They outline the vision, mechanisms, funding and governance structure, and partnerships needed to unlock finance for smallholders, drive sustainable growth, and secure Ethiopia’s position as a global coffee leader.
