Ma Jinzhong, Technician of Shared Harvest, 67 years old, from Shandong Province. He joined Shared Harvest in 2013, and is now overseeing all the greenhouses on the Pear Garden Farm. When he just started farming in 1970, he said there was no fertilizer or pesticide. Farmers started using Ammonia in 1975, and a few years later, urea fertilizers. Since joining Shared Harvest in 2013, he learned about organic farming, and found it quite similar to the way he farmed when he was 18. “We used cow manure before, and we use it now. I’m going back to how I worked in the beginning.”

Ni Guangxuan, 28, from Qinhuangdao, Hebei province. He’s a trainee of the Little Donkey Farm (Shi Yan’s first farm), and as part of the trainee program, he’s working at Shared Harvest for 6 months. He used to be a cook, and tried to run his own organic farm in Qinhuangdao between 2014 and 2018. He joined the trainee program to learn more about organic farming and how it works on a big farm. “I did everything myself on my farm, from farming to harvest, from packaging to sales, all by myself. Here everyone has their own job. There’s a clear division of labor.” In the future, he hopes to open his own farm that’s supported by restaurants, inspired by the concept of Restaurant Supported Agriculture.

Zhu Jinlan, from Fujian province. She moved to Beijing in 2005, and ran a shop that sells wheat-based noodle, buns and pancakes. She joined Shared Harvest last year when her son and his wife (both work at Shared Harvest too) had a second child. She helps the couple take care of their kid, and opened up the noodle workshop in Shared Harvest.

Liu Guiyan, from Heilongjiang province, left her hometown to work on a farm in Beijing in 2014. She picked up some farming skills there, and joined Shared Harvest last year.
